牙买加原本是印第安人阿拉瓦克族居住地。1494年哥伦布来到牙买加，1509年成为西班牙殖民地。在1655年被英国占领。在1866年成为英国直辖殖民地。1962年8月6日牙买加宣告独立，是英联邦的成员国。 牙买加位于加勒比海西北部，是西印度群岛中的国家，人口260万，面积11000平方公里。牙买加人占这个国家人口的96％以上，其中非洲黑人后裔占77％，黑白混血人占15％，欧洲人占5％，还有印度人、华人、古巴人。居民中54．7％信奉基督新教，9％信奉天主教。官方语言是英语，首都金斯敦是全国政治、经济、文化中心，也是世界著名的天然港口。牙买加属热带雨林气候，雨量充沛，年平均气温27℃。拥有铝土、铜、铁、锌、石膏、钻等自然资源。 首都 金斯敦 国土面积：10,991平方公里 总人口：2,680,029 GDP：116 亿美元 人均GDP：4,300 美元 国际域名缩写： jm 国际电话区号： +1-876

　　牙买加主要的出口商品有铝土、氧化铝、蔗糖、香蕉。主要进口食品、粮食、石油、机械及交通设备以及其他制成品。美国、加拿大、法国、英国、委内瑞拉、墨西哥是主要贸易伙伴。1991年进口额约20．14亿美元，出口额约14．08亿美元。 中牙两国1972年11月建交，1991年中国向牙买加出口商品500万美元，主要是罐头、棉布、棉织品、自行车、电器。
