　　巴尔干山（Стара Планина，意为老山）将保加利亚分为北部的多瑙河平原和南部的色雷斯低地。西南部是罗多彼山脉，其穆萨拉峰高2925米是保加利亚和巴尔干半岛的最高点。 向东保加利亚滨临黑海，多瑙河是保加利亚与罗马尼亚的界河。 保加利亚属温带大陆性气候，东部受黑海的影响，南部受地中海的影响而有地中海式气候。气温在一月的-2°和2°之间（在山地到-10°）和七月的19°至25°（山地约10°）之间。年平均降雨量在450至600毫米间（山地达1300毫米）。

　　保加利亚的总统是全民直接选举的，任期为5年，此后可以再被重选一次。总统是国家首脑和军队最高指挥官。总统也是国家安全咨询委员会的首席，他没有立法的权利，但可以将一个法律驳回让议会再次讨论。通过多数决议议会还是可以让该被驳回的法律生效。 保加利亚的议会，国民议会（Narodno Sabranie）采取一会制，共240议员，任期是四年。一个党派必须获得4%的选票才能进入议会。议会有立法、批准政府开支预算、计划总统选举、选举或撤除总理、宣战、决定在国外驻军和批准外交协议的权利。 在2001年6月17日的大选中新组织的“西美昂二世国民运动”获得42.7%的选票。其首领，保加利亚的末代国王西美昂·萨克斯科布尔格茨基宣布要在800天内明显提高人民生活水平，为此他要提高薪水，以及降低税收率。此外许多人希望他的得选可以吸引外来投资。 2004年3月29日保加利亚加入北大西洋公约组织。保加利亚与欧洲联盟进行加入谈判，希望能够在2007年加入欧洲联盟。
